Prophecies in the Tanach תנך

That Were Fulfilled

At the First Coming of the Messiah

Part V:  The Messiah המשיח and the Resurrection of the Dead תחית המתים

The Resurrection of the Dead תחית המתים  is one of the central tenets of Judaism, and it is the great hope of the Jewish people עם ישראל.  It is the thirteenth principle, or the last tenet in the “Thirteen Principles of Faith שלשה עשר עקרים.”

I believe with complete faith that there will be a resurrection of the dead whenever the wish emanates from the Creator.  Blessed is His Name and exalted is His mention, forever and for all eternity.

The Resurrection of the Dead is so important that it is given the prominent place as the second blessing of the Shemoneh Esrei שמונה עשרה or Amidah עמידה.  The outstanding importance of this blessing is further accentuated because when the chazzan חזן  recites the  Shemoneh Esrei שמונה עשרה, the Kedushah קדושה is recited after the second blessing.

G-d’s Might

You are eternally mighty, my Lord, the One who resurrects the dead, abundantly able to save.  You sustain the living with kindness, resurrect the dead with abundant mercy, support the fallen, heal the sick, release the confined, and maintain the faith of HASHEM to those asleep in the dust.  Who is like You, O Master of mighty deeds, and who is comparable to You, O King

who caused death and restores life, and makes Yeshua to spring forth as a young plant.

You are faithful to resurrect the dead.  Blessed are You, HASHEM, Who resurrects the dead.

The Messiah המשיח sits upon the throne of David and rules and reigns over Israel forever.

This is prophesied by the Prophets of Israel.

The Lord has sworn to David in truth, from which He will never turn back, “Of the fruit of your body I shall cause to sit upon your throne.”

I will forever keep My kindness for him, and My covenant will remain true to him.

And I shall make his seed endure forever, and his throne as the days of the heavens.

I shall not profane My covenant, neither shall I alter the utterance of My lips.

One thing have I sworn by My holiness, that I will not fail David

His seed will be forever and his throne is like the sun before Me.

Like the moon, which is established forever, and it is a witness in the sky, eternally true.

And again it is prophesied:

And now, so shall you say to My servant, to David; “Thus says the Lord of Hosts. I took you from the sheep cote, from following the sheep, to be a leader over My people Israel.

When your days are finished and you shall lie with your forefathers, then I will raise up your seed that shall proceed from your body after you, and I will establish his kingdom.

And your house and your kingdom shall be confirmed forever before you; your throne shall be established forever.”

And the prophecy is repeated again in another place:

And now, so shall you say to My servant, to David: So said the Lord of Hosts; I took you from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be a leader over My people, Israel.

And it will come to pass when your days are finished to go with your forefathers, then I shall raise up your seed after you, who will be of your sons, and I shall establish his kingdom.

He will build Me a house, and I shall establish his throne forever.

I shall be to him as a father, and he will be to Me as a son, and I shall not remove My loving-kindness from him as I removed [it] from he who was before you.

And I shall station him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.”

These prophecies are confirmed by the Prophet Isaiah:

And a shoot shall spring forth from the stem of Jesse, and a twig shall sprout from his roots.

Isaiah 11:1

For a child has been born to us, a son given to us, and the authority is upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called: “the wondrous adviser, the mighty God,

the everlasting Father, the prince of peace.”

To him who increases the authority, and for peace without end, on David’s throne and on his kingdom, to establish it and to support it with justice and with righteousness; from now and to eternity, the zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:5-6

The prophet in the Psalm puts the coronation on these prophecies:

For You have preceded him with the blessings of the good man; You have placed a gold crown on his head.

He asked You for life; You gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.

Psalm 21:4-5

The Messiah המשיח has been chosen by HASHEM to reign on the throne of David forever. Thus the Messiah המשיח must be the first one that HASHEM raises from the dead.  The body of this resurrection is a new creation fashioned by the hands of HASHEM.

This is described by the words of the prophet:

“But I have enthroned My king on Zion, My holy mount,

I will tell of the decree; The Lord said to me,

“You are My son; this day have I begotten you.”

Psalm 2:6-7

The Messiah המשיח is the firstborn from the dead, and his new body, although it has the same features recognizable from the old body, is a new creation by G-d אלוהים.   This body is fashioned by HASHEM  so that it will never die.  It is not subject to disease, decay, and deterioration like the Adamic body.  It is also without sin.  It is not subject to the destructive cycles of the law of entropy, which came into effect in the creation at the fall of Adam.

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע now possesses this new body.  He has also received the power from HASHEM to fashion by the Spirit of Holiness הרוח הקודש the bodies of all who believe and trust in him into the likeness of his new glorious body.  This is why He is called the ‘firstfruits’, or the first begotten from the dead. HASHEM says this to him in the prophecy in this Psalm:

“this day have I begotten you”

Here HASHEM is speaking of the day in which He by His Eternal Spirit raised the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע from the dead.  He raised him from the dead in a newly created body that had never been before in the universe.

Now the Prophets of Israel tell us that the Messiahהמשיח  is from the seed of Abraham and the seed of David the king.

This natural body could be killed, but the Prophets of Israel tell us that the body of the Messiah of Israel של ישראל המשיח could not be in the grave long enough to see decay or corruption.

For You shall not leave my soul in hell; You shall not allow Your Holy One to see corruption..

Psalm 16:10

Since the body of the Messiah המשיח could not see corruption or decay שחת, it could not be in the grave more than three days.   If a body is in the grave more than three days, decay sets in and the body begins to rot.  This agrees with the words of the Prophets in the Tanach תנך.

After two days He will revive us, on the third day He will raise us up, and we will live before Him.

Hosea 6:2

When some of the religious rulers in Israel asked the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע for a sign from heaven to prove to them that he was the Messiah המשיח,

Yeshua ישוע  referred to the miracle of the third day.  This occurred in Jewish history with the Prophet Jonah.

And the Lord appointed a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah 2:1

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע responded to the religious rulers that the sign from heaven would be his resurrection from the dead on the THIRD day.

”For no sign shall be given to this wicked generation other than the sign of Jonah.  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so shall the Son of Man בן אדם be three days and three nights in the belly of the earth (hell).”

The sign from heaven that he was the Messiah of Israel המשיח  של ישראל was his resurrection from the dead –Sheol שאול

To the bottom of the mountains I descended, the earth-its bars are closed on me forever; but You brought up my life from Gehinnom, O Lord, my God.

Jonah 2:7

For You shall not forsake my soul to the grave

Psalm 16:10

The prophets of Israel talk about the descent of the Messiah into the sheol-the grave and hell.

They also speak in prophecy about the victory of the Messiah over sheol-the grave and hell-and his ascent out the the pit.

You showed me great and evil troubles, You will revive me again, and from the depths of the earth You will again raise me up.

Behold for peace I had great bitterness: but you in love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption, for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

For the grave shall not thank You, nor shall death praise You; those who descend into the pit shall not hope for Your truth.

The living, the living, he shall praise You, like; as I do this day.  A father shall inform his children of Your truth.

For You have rescued my soul from death, my eye from tears, and my foot from stumbling.

I shall walk before the Lord in the lands of the living.

Isaiah 16:1

In the Tanach תנך dew is a representation of eternal youth, or the dew of the resurrection.

It is given by the prophets as characteristic of the Messiah

The manna that HASHEM gave from heaven would rest upon the dew in the morning.  It would

rest upon it supernaturally and the weight of it would not cause the dew to melt, but instead

manna would be supported by the dew.

When the dew descended on the camp at night, the manna would descend upon it.

Numbers 11:9

The dew of the resurrection gives the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע the power to reign on the throne of David forever.

Your people will volunteer on the day of your power.  From the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth is upon you.

Psalm 110:3

This dew of the resurrection is the dew of eternal youth which rests upon the Messiah המשיח forever.

for a dew of lights is your dew

This dew of the resurrection gives the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע an eternal freshness that is described by the prophets of Israel.

The greatness of your handsomeness is greater than any of the sons of Adam.  Grace is poured out upon your lips, therefore G-d has blessed you forever.

And again:

Your throne, O G-d, [will exist] forever and ever; the scepter of equity is the scepter of your kingdom.

You loved righteousness and you hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, anointed you with oil of joy above that of your friends.

Psalm 45:3,7-8

For You have preceded him with the blessings of the good man; You have placed a gold crown on his head

He asked You for life; You gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.

His glory is great in Your salvation; majesty and beauty You place upon him.

For You make him blessings forever; You shall make him happy with joy before You.

Psalm 21:4-7

As for me, you uphold me in my integrity, and you have set me before your face forever.

Add days to the days of the king, his years as the years of all generations.

He will dwell forever before G-d; mercy and truth are manna that will keep him.

Psalm 61:7-8

His name shall endure forever; his name shall be continued as long as the sun; and all peoples shall be blessed in him; all nations will praise him, being prospered by him.

Through the resurrection of the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע, HASHEM exalts him above all the kings of the earth.

Behold My servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up, and he shall be very high.

My faithfulness and My kindness will be with him, and with My name his horn will be raised.

I shall place his hand over the sea, and his right hand over the rivers.

He will call to Me, You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.

I, too, shall make him a firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

But I have enthroned My king on Zion, My holy mount.

I will tell of the decree; The Lord said to me,

“You are My son; this day have I begotten you.

Request of Me, and I will make nations your inheritance,

and the ends of the earth your possession.

You shall break them with an iron rod;

like a potter’s vessel you shall shatter them.”

And now, [you] kings, be wise; be admonished, [you] judges of the earth.

Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with quaking.

Arm yourselves with purity lest He become angry and you perish in the way, for in a moment His wrath will be kindled; the praises of all who take refuge in Him.

Psalm 2:6-12

When the Messiah Yeshua rules the earth in His resurrection, the entire earth will be blessed, and

become a paradise.  Justice and truth and mercy will reign on the earth, and the entire earth will

be filled with the knowledge of HASHEM  as the waters cover the sea.

They shall fear You in the presence of the sun and before the moon for generations upon generations.

He shall descend as rain upon cut vegetation, as raindrops that drip upon the earth.

The righteous shall flourish in his days, and there shall be abundance of peace as long as the moon endures.

He shall reign from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the land.

Nobles shall kneel before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust.

The kings of Tarshish and the isles return tribute; the kings of Sheba and Seba shall approach with a gift.

And all kings will prostrate themselves to him; and all nations shall serve him.

He will save a needy one who cries out, and a poor one who has no helper.

He will have pity on the poor and needy, and he will save the souls of the needy.

From blows and from robbery he will redeem their soul, and their blood will be dear in his eyes.

He shall live, and the gold of Sheba shall be given to him; prayer shall be made for him continually; every day they shall praise him.

There shall be an abundance of grain in the land, and it shall burst out on the mountain peaks;

the earth shall be crowned with fruit like Lebanon: and they will blossom forth from the city like

 the grass of the earth.

Psalm 72:5-16

And a shoot shall spring forth from the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall sprout from his roots.

And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and heroism, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

And he shall be animated by the fear of the Lord, and neither with the sight of his eyes shall he judge, nor with the hearing of his ears shall he chastise.

And he shall judge the poor justly, and he shall chastise with equity the humble of the earth, and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth and with the breath of his lips he shall put the wicked to death.

And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faith the girdle of his strength..

And a wolf shall live with a lamb, and a leopard shall lie with a kid; and a calf and a lion cub and a fatling shall lie down together, and a small child shall lead them.

And a cow and a bear shall graze together, their children shall lie; and a lion, like cattle, shall eat straw.

And an infant shall play over the hole of an asp and over the eyeball of an adder, a weaned child shall stretch forth his hand.

They shall neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mount, for the land shall be full of knowledge of the Lord as water covers the sea bed.

And it shall come to pass on that day, that the root of Jesse, which stands as a banner for peoples, to him shall the nations inquire, and his peace shall be with glory and honor..

Isaiah 11:1-10

Truly, His salvation is near those who fear Him,

His glory shalll dwell in our land.

Kindness and truth have met;

 righteousness and peace have kissed.

Truth will sprout from the earth,

and righteousness will look down from heaven.

HASHEM too will give good, and our land will give its produce.

Righteousness will go before him,

and He will place it on the way of his steps.

Psalm 85:10-14
