The Kaddish and the Messiah

The Kaddish and the Messiah

We will examine the relationship between the Kaddish קדיש and the work and the ministry of the Messiah המשיח.

The first sentence or part of the Kaddish קדיש declares that the Great Name of HASHEM will grow and increase in its grandeur and greatness, and that the holiness of HASHEM will increase and grow  in the world that He created according to His desire, for His delight, and according to His pleasure.

May His great name be exalted and sanctified. In the world which He created according to His will!

This is exactly what the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע declared was his primary purpose.  He declared to his talmidim: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work”

This is according to the prophecy of the Messiah המשיח in Psalm 40:7-9: תהלים מ:ז-ט

You desired neither sacrifice nor meal offering; You have opened my ears; a burnt offering or a sin offering You did not request.

Then I said, “Behold I come,”  in the scroll of a book it is written of me.

I delight to do Your will, O God; Your Torah is written in my inner most parts.

The second part of the Kaddish קדיש is for the kingdom of HASHEM to reign in the earth during the time of our life, in our days, and in the life of all Israel, and that this should occur quickly and be manifested soon.

May He establish His kingdom during your lifetime and during your days and during the lifetimes of all the House of Israel, speedily and very soon! And say, Amen.

After the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישיע had completed his miqvah, and after he had overcome all the temptations of the devil, he returned victorious to Galilee.  The first thing that he began to do was to preach the kingdom of HASHEM in all the synagogues throughout the region. His message was that the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, therefore, and believe the good news.

There was two hallmark features of the Messiah performed to announce the kingdom of HASHEM.  These features were to bring about the swift manifestation of the kingdom of HASHEM in Israel which would expedite the fulfillment of the request in the prayer of the Kaddish קדיש.

Hallmark feature #1:  Yeshua ישוע cast devils (demons) out of those people who were possessed with them in order to free them from bondage to the devil.

Hallmark feature #2: Yeshua ישוע healed every kind of sickness, disease, and infirmity.  A signature disease that he healed was leprosy.  This included not only cleansing from the plague, but also a miraculous restoration or recreation of the body parts that had been eaten away by the disease.  This was a signature disease because the healing of leprosy was one of the outstanding prophetic characteristics to recognize the ministry of the Messiah Ben Davidמשיח בן דוד when he appeared in Israel.  He also healed physical disabilities such as dumb-mutes, deafness, blindness, lameness, crooked backs, and others in order to fulfil the prophecies of the Messiah המשיח.

We will examine each of these hallmarks in detail, together with some of the prophecies that prelude them in the Tanach

Hallmark #1:  Casting out of devils

Prophecies: 1. Moses משה in the Torah makes reference to the Messiah המשיח as one like to himself who will be sent to deliver many in Israel from the bondage, cruelty, slavery, and oppression of the enemy.

HASHEM your G-d will raise up unto you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like unto me; unto him you shall hearken;

according to all that you desired of HASHEM your G-d in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of YHVH my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.

And HASHEM said unto me, they have well said that which they have spoken.

I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hear my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

  1. Psalm 136:7

Who executes justice for the oppressed; Who gives food to the hungry.

 HASHEM loosens and sets free the prisoners;

  1. Isaiah 42:7

To open blind eyes,

to bring prisoners out of a dungeon,

those who sit in darkness out of a prison.

From that time began Yeshua  ישוע to preach, and to say, Repent ; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

And Yeshua  ישוע  went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people.

And the report of him went forth into all Lebanon and Syria: and they brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, possessed with demons, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them.

And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from beyond the Jordan.

Yeshua ישוע said:

But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.

And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were sick, and them that were possessed with demons.

And all the city was gathered together at the door.

And he healed many that were sick with divers diseases, and cast out many demons; and he suffered not the demons to speak, because they knew him.

And he went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out demons.

Hallmark #2:  The healing of the sick.

In the fulfilling of the Kaddish קדיש, the healing of the sick was important in the Torah for the ushering in of the Kingdom of G-d.  HASHEM states clearly to Israel:

And He said, If you hearken to the voice of the Lord, your God, and you do what is proper in His eyes, and you listen closely to His commandments and observe all His statutes, all the sicknesses that I have visited upon Egypt I will not visit upon you, for I, the Lord, heal you

Therefore the healing of the sick was a great part of the works of the Messiah

And when they were come out of the boat, straightway the people knew him,

and ran round about that whole region, and began to carry about on their beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

And wheresoever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

Yeshua ישוע also healed leprosy.  The healing of leprosy was one of the signs given by HASHEM to Moses.  It was also an earmark of the Messiah the Son of David

And when he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

And behold, there came to him a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, son of David, if you will, you can make me clean.

And he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be made clean. And straightway his leprosy was cleansed.

And Yeshua ישוע said unto him, See that you tell no man; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

The third part of the Kaddish קדיש  is the exaltation and the blessing of the great name of HASHEM.

May His great name be blessed forever, and to all eternity!

Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, above and beyond all the blessings, hymns, praises and consolations that are uttered in the world! And say, Amen.

The Messiah המשיח stated that his purpose was to do the will of HASHEM in order that the name of HASHEM growing in blessing on the earth, will be elevated and exalted above all creation, including all aspects of lblessing, songs, praises, and comforts.  The goal that is to be accomplished is stated by the prophet in the Tanach תנך:

Habakkuk 2:14

For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע said:

I glorified thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do.

As Moses משה did nothing of himself, but only as HASHEM told him, so the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ושוע did nothing of himself, as he declared:

Yeshua therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing: for what things soever he does, these the Son also does in like manner.

And again he says:

For I speak not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

And again he says:

I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.

The fourth part of the Kaddish concerns HASHEM and His reception and answering of the prayers and intercessions of His people Israel.

May the prayers and supplications of all Israel be accepted

by their Father who is in Heaven; And say, Amen.

Israel has always prayed for our final redemption by the hand of HASHEM.  All other prayers, even though they may be concerned with an exigency of the moment, are a subset or a derivative of that prayer.  In Psalm 20 כ    תהלים  this theme is encapsulated.

We will shout for joy in Your Yeshua, and in the name of our God we will set up our standards;
the LORD fulfil all your petitions.

Now know I that the LORD saves His Messiah;
He will answer him from His holy heaven with the mighty acts of His saving right arm.

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע  proceeded to fulfill the prayers of Israel for a redeemer גואל  to accomplish the redemption of Israel.  According to the prophet Isaiah;

Who has believed our report? And to whom hath the arm of the LORD been revealed?

All we like sheep have gone astray; we turned every one of us to his own way; and the LORD smote him with the iniquity of us all.

But he was wounded because of our transgressions; he was crushed because of our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we were healed.

By oppression and judgment he was taken away, and with his generation who did reason? for he was cut off out of the land of the living, for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due

Yet it pleased the LORD to crush him by the disease of guilt; to make his soul a guilt offering in restitution, that he might see his seed, prolong his days, and that the purpose of HASHEM might prosper by his hand:

So the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע  accomplished the redemption of Israel which was necessary for the prayers of Israel to be fulfilled.  As the prophet Isaiah said:

Come now, and let us reason together, declares the LORD; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;

The fifth part of the Kaddish קדיש has to do with the fear of death that every individual has in his or her life, and the peace that comes when he or she is released from that fear.  This in turn brings the added bliss of the enjoyment of the life that the person is now living. This affects all Israel.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life upon us and upon all Israel; And say, Amen.

This peace from heaven is mentioned in Psalm 56

In God do I trust; I will not be afraid; what can man do unto me?

Your vows are upon me, O God; I will render thank-offerings unto you.

For you have delivered my soul from death; have you not delivered my feet from stumbling?
that I may walk before God in the light of the living.

This deliverance from the fear of death is inextricably connected to the Messiah נמשיח who took the vows upon himself. This is declared in Psalm 116: תהלים קטז

I will lift up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

And this is confirmed in Psalm 68:

Blessed is the Lord; every day God lavishes upon us our salvation forever. Selah

God is unto us a God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belongs deliverance from the issues of death

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע demonstrated that he had power over death.  For this reason he is called the PRINCE OF PEACE.  The prophet Isaiah says:

For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Wonder-Counselor-Mighty God-Everlasing Father-PRINCE OF PEACE;

The Scripture tells us that this mighty deliverance is the work of the Messiah

But one has somewhere testified, saying, What is man, that you are mindful of him? Or the son of man, that you visit him?

You made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And did set him over the works of your hands:

You did put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he subjected all things unto him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we see not yet all things subjected to him.

But we behold him who hath been made a little lower than the angels, even Yeshua, for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for every man.

Since then the children are sharers in flesh and blood, he also himself in like manner partook of the same; that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil;

and might deliver all them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע   demonstrated that he had power over death so the words of the prophet Isaiah were fulfilled:

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

The following three occurrences show where the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע  demonstrated that he had the power to raise the dead.

  1. Jairus’ daughter

And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Yeshua’s feet, and besought him to come into his house;

for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went the multitudes thronged him.

While he was yet speaking, there came one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying, Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Teacher.

But Yeshua hearing it, answered him, Fear not: only believe, and she shall be made whole.

And when he came to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter in with him, save Peter, and John, and James, and the father of the maiden and her mother.

And all were weeping, and bewailing her: but he said, Weep not; for her.  She is not dead, but she is sleeping.

And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

But he, taking her by the hand, called, saying, Maiden, arise

And her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately: and he commanded that something be given her to eat.

And her parents were amazed: but he charged them to tell no man what had been done.

  1. The widow’s son at Nain

And it came to pass soon afterwards, that Yeshua went to a city called Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great multitude.

Now when he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, there was carried out one that was dead, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

And he drew near and touched the bier: and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto you, Arise.

And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.

And fear took hold on all: and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is arisen among us: and, God has visited his people.

And this report went forth concerning him in the whole of Judaea, and all the region round about.

  1. Lazarus

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Miriam and her sister Martha.

The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.

But when Yeshua heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.

Now Yeshua loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.

Then after this he said to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;

and many of the Judeans had come to Martha and Miriam, to console them concerning their brother.

Martha therefore, when she heard that Yeshua was coming, went out met him: but Miriam still sat in the house.

Martha therefore said unto Yeshua, Lord, if thou had been here, my brother would not have died.

And even now I know that, whatsoever you shalt ask of God, God will give it to you.

Yeshua said unto her, Your brother shall rise again.

Martha said unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Yeshua said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes on me, though he dies, yet shall he live;

and whosoever lives and believes on me shall never die. Do you believe this?

She said unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, even he that comes into the world.

And when she had said this, she went away, and called Miriam her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is her, and calls you.

And Miriam, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.

(Now Yeshua had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)

The Judeans then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Miriam, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

Miriam therefore, when she came where Yeshua was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died.

When Yeshua therefore saw her weeping, and the Judeans also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

and said, Where have you laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.

Yeshua wept.

The Judeans therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?

Yeshua therefore again groaning in himself comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

Yeshua said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said unto him, Lord, by this time the body is decaying; for he has been dead four days.

Yeshua said to her, Said I not unto you, that, if you believe, you should see the glory of God?

So they took away the stone. And Yeshua lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank you that thou hear me.

And I know that you hear me always: but because of the multitude that stands around I said it, that they may believe that you have sent me.

And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Yeshua ישוע said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Many therefore of the Judeans, who came to Miriam and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

The sixth part of the Kaddish קדיש  is about the destruction of death in the high places, and death is swallowed up in victory

May He who makes peace in His high places grant peace upon us and upon all Israel; And say, Amen.

The prophet Isaiah declares in Isaiah 25:7-9

And He will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering that is cast over all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations.

He will swallow up death for ever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of His people will He take away from off all the earth; for the LORD hath spoken it.

And it shall be said in that day: ‘Lo, this is our God, for whom we waited, that He might save us; this is the LORD, for whom we waited, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.’

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע   sealed this prophesy in his own body when he physically rose from the dead in Jerusalem.  He now has the power to destroy the power of death over any individual, and to redeem the entire nation of Israel from the power of death.  This fulfills the prophecy in Hosea 13:14:

I shall ransom them from the power of hell!  I shall redeem them from death! Ho, thy plagues, O death! Ho, thy destruction, O hell! Repentance is hid from My eyes!
