The Rock, Israel, and the Messiah

The Rock is of such importance in Israel’s thinking that it was the one word that was chosen to bridge the gap between the religious and the secular framers of the Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel in 1948.  It was decided that the Rock was the best word that could be chosen to create unity among the people of Israel.  One of the unique aspects of the Rock is that it is tangible, material in the physical non-spiritual realm, yet is also spiritual. These unique features and attributes are delineated and corroborated in the Tanach התנך .

This event it described in Wikipedia:

Religion

The second major issue was over the inclusion of God in the last section of the document, with the final draft of the using the phrase “and placing our trust in the Almighty”. The two rabbis, Shapira and Yehuda Leib Maimon, argued for its inclusion, saying that it could not be omitted, with Shapira supporting the wording “God of Israel” or “the Almighty and Redeemer of Israel”.[8] It was strongly opposed by Zisling, a member of the secularist Mapam. In the end the phrase “Rock of Israel” was used, which could be interpreted as either referring to God, or the land of Eretz Israel, Ben-Gurion saying “Each of us, in his own way, believes in the ‘Rock of Israel’ as he conceives it. I should like to make one request: Don’t let me put this phrase to a vote.” Although its use was still opposed by Zisling, the phrase was accepted without a vote.

Therefore the last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel declares:

“Placing our trust in the Rock of Israel, we affix our signatures to this proclamation…”

This decision has great prophetic significance.

  1. HASHEM put it in their hearts and minds because this time Israel would never again be uprooted from the land of Israel ארץ ישראל, and scattered by HASHEM among the gentile nations.
  2. This time the Messiah המשיח will appear and war against the gentile nations.
  3. He will establish His kingdom, the kingdom of HASHEM, and sit upon the throne of David, ruling Israel and the entire earth.
  4. This event will occur in the midst of the last war.
  5. The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 ushered in the period of the appearing and the return of the Messiah of Israel

So now the question arises as to WHY the word ROCK has such profound and great prophetic significance.

There are three primary words in Hebrew for ROCK, and each one refers to the Messiah המשיח, and the past, present, and future of Israel and the Jewish people.

These three words are found in the Tanach תמך. They are interconnected, bolster one another, and enlarge and expand the fundamental meaning and prophetic significance of the word “ROCK.”

1. TSUR  צור

This ROCK has certain attributes.  It is very hard like FLINT.  It first appears in the second book of the TORAH תורה Exodus שמות.  It appears in the wilderness of Rephidim.  More than a month after Israel had departed from the land of Egypt, the congregation entered into the valley of Rephidim, a fearful desolate desert wilderness.   Israel had no water and murmured against Moses because they were thirsty.  HASHEM gave the ROCK צור as the answer and solution to their complaint.  He told Moses to SMITE THE ROCK with the rod that Moses used to perform the miracles in Egypt.

“The people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and they said, Why have you brought us up from Egypt to make me and my children and my livestock die of thirst?

Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, What shall I do for this people? Just a little longer and they will stone me!

And the Lord said to Moses, Pass before the people and take with you [some] of the elders of Israel, and take into your hand your staff, with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Behold, I shall stand there before you on the rock in Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, and the people will drink.  Moses did so before the eyes of the elders of Israel.”

Exodus 17:3-6

This FLINTY ROCK is the Messiah of Israel He had to be smitten in order to deliver us from the dryness and the desolation of sin.

The Prophet Isaiah makes this clear:

“I gave my back to smiters and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I did not hide my face from shame and spitting.

But the Lord God helps me, therefore, I was not confounded; therefore, I made my face like flint, and I knew that I would not be ashamed.”

Isaiah 50:6-7

“Indeed, he bore our illnesses, and our pains-he carried them, yet we accounted him as plagued, smitten by God and oppressed.

But he was painfully wounded because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; the chastisement of our welfare and peace was upon him, and with his stripes and wounds we were healed.

We all went astray like sheep, we have turned, each one to his own way, and the Lord has smitten him with the iniquity of us all.”

Isaiah 53:4-6

This smiting of the ROCK  צורwas commanded by HASHEM so that the waters of eternal life would flow out to us.  We can drink of its abundance and be delivered from the death and desolation that is in this present world because of wickedness and corruption and sin.

The Messiah המשיח said the following proclamation:

“Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Yeshua ישוע stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink.

He who believes on me, as the Torah has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

And again the Messiah  המשיח says:

“All who drink of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up into eternal life.”

Moses משה reiterates and confirms the ROCK הצור  to be FLINT   חלמיש in the Torah, and the prophet in the Psalms confirms the abundance of water that HASHEM provided through the ROCK while Israel was in the wilderness.

“Who led you through that great and awesome desert, [in which were] snakes, vipers and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought water for you out of ROCK of FLINT,”

Deuteronomy 8:15

“From before the Master, Who created the earth, from before the God of Jacob,

Who transforms the rock into a lake of water, the FLINT חלמיש into a fountain of water.”

Psalm 114:7-8

Moses משה also confirms the ROCK to the name of the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע.

“And Jeshurun became fat and rebelled; you grew fat, thick and rotund; [Israel] forsook the God Who made them, and spurned the [Mighty] Rock  their Yeshua salvation.”

The ROCK הצור also acted as defense for the tribes of Israel as they journeyed from place to place in the wilderness.  It followed them and protected them from enemy attacks from behind.  It was Israel’s rear guard or rear reward.

In the valley of Rephidim, after the congregation had been introduced to the ROCK, they resumed their journey to Sinai, but Amalek attacked suddenly, launching a sneak attack from the rear.

The ROCK was instrumental in repelling the attack, minimizing the damage, and giving time for Joshua יהושע to win the battle.  David דוד speaks about the ability of the ROCK to instruct in war.

“Blessed is the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war.”

Psalm 144:1-2

The ROCK הצור also had the unique ability to bring forth oil for beauty, health, healing, and anointing.  Moses משה testifies to this fact.

“He made them ride upon the high places of the earth, that they would eat the produce of the field. He let them suck honey from a rock, and oil from the mighty part of the ROCK OF FLINT.”

Job testifies about the oil.

“When I washed my feet with butter, and the rock that was with me would pour forth rivulets of oil;”

Job: 29:6

The ROCK הצור could SPEAK, and it would give out honey as it taught the sweetness of the Torahתורה .

“The Spirit of the Lord spoke in me, And His word was upon my tongue.

The God of Israel said, concerning me spoke the Rock of Israel; “A ruler over men shall be the righteous (man), he that rules in the fear of God.”

“Then He would feed them with the fat of wheat and I would satisfy you with honey from a rock.”

2.  SELA   סלע

The second Hebrew word for ROCK  Sela  סלע does not appear in the Torah תורה until the fourth book, the book of Numbers במדבר.  Moses and the whole congregation of Israel come into the wilderness of Zin מדבר צין.  Miriam dies there in Kadeshקדש , and the ROCK–הצורthe Messiah-המשיח stops giving them water.

“The entire congregation of the children of Israel arrived at the desert of Zin in the first month, and the people settled in Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there.

The congregation had no water; so they assembled against Moses and Aaron.”

Numbers 20:1-2

Why does the ROCK –THE TSUR—THE MESSIAH המשיח -הצור after following the camp of Israel and keeping them alive for forty years in their wanderings in the wilderness, all of a sudden stop giving them water?  And why does He change His name from TSUR צור to SELA סלע?

The generation that came out of Egypt מצרים, from twenty years old and upward, had almost all died in the wilderness.  Miriam מרים was one of the last ones to die.

Now the congregation of Israel was a second generation, composed mostly of those who had been born in the wilderness, and had never known the labors of the slavery in Egypt.  They were the ones who were going to go into battle and conquer the promised land. The ROCK-the Messiah-now had to change His name from TSUR צור to SELA סלע, and become a FORTRESS to Israel in battle.

Then Moses was instructed by HASHEM  to SPEAK to the ROCK סלע, and not strike it as HASHEM  had previously instructed him to strike the TSUR צור.  This is because the Messiah Yeshua ישוע המשיח was stricken ONCE for the iniquities of Israel, but NEVER A SECOND TIME.  Now that he is exalted at the right hand of HASHEM, all that Israel has to do is to SPEAK to him, and the waters of life will flow out to them. This is true individually and collectively.

This is all inextricably connected to the atonement and redemption:

“And according to the Torah, almost all things are cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.

It was necessary therefore that the copies or pattern of the things in the heavens should be cleansed and purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

For the Messiahהמשיח  entered not into the Holy Placeקודש הקודשים  made with hands, which was a pattern of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear before the face of God for us:

nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entered into the Holy Placeקודש הקודשים  year by year with blood of others;

For then he must often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once at the end of the ages hath he been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment;

so the Messiahהמשיח  also, having been once offered to remove the sins of many, shall appear a second time to those who look for him, without sin to salvation.”

Again it is further confirmed and emphasized:

“By the will of HASHEM we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Yeshua the Messiah ישוע המשיח once for all.

And every priest indeed stood day by day ministering and offering oftent the same sacrifices which can never take away sins:

but Yeshua ישוע, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;

From that time forward expecting until his enemies be made his footstool.

For by one offering he hath perfected forever those who are sanctified.

And the Holy Spirit  רוח הקודש also bears witness to us; for after He has said,

“This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, says the Lord: I will put my lawsתורתי  on their heart, And upon their mind also will I write them;

And their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.”

Moses and Aaron transgressed this Word by smiting the ROCK סלע a second time, instead of speaking to it as HASHEM had commanded them.

Therefore HASHEM punished them.

“The congregation had no water; so they assembled against Moses and Aaron. The people quarreled with Moses, and they said, “If only we had died with the death of our brothers before the Lord.

Why have you brought the congregation of the Lord to this desert so that we and our livestock should die there? Why have you taken us out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place; it is not a place for seeds, or for fig trees, grapevines, or pomegranate trees, and there is no water to drink.”

Moses and Aaron moved away from the assembly to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and they fell on their faces. [Then] the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

“Take the staff and assemble the congregation, you and your brother Aaron, and speak to the rock in their presence so that it will give forth its water. You shall bring forth water for them from the rock and give the congregation and their livestock to drink.”

Moses took the staff from before the Lord as He had commanded him.

Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation in front of the rock, and he said to them, “Now listen, you rebels, can we draw water for you from this rock?”

Moses raised his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, when an abundance of water gushed forth, and the congregation and their livestock drank.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Since you did not have faith in Me to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly to the Land which I have given them.”

Numbers 20:2-12

In spite of the disobedience of Moses and Aaron, HASHEM, in His great mercyרב חסד  toward Israelישראל , caused an abundance of water to flow out of the ROCK  HaSELAH  הסלע.  This is confirmed by the Psalmist:

“He drew flowing water from a rock and brought down water like rivers.”

Any Jew can speak to the Messiah Yeshua who is now in his resurrected and exalted position at the right hand of HASHEM, and HASHEM will pour out upon him the abundant waters of eternal life.  He is a bulwark fortress and defense, an enabler and empowerer in the battles against the enemy.

In Nehemiah נחמיה the seven Levites in their prayer of repentance and praise to HASHEM also confirm the fact.

“And bread from heaven You gave them for their hunger, and You took water out of a rock for them for their thirst, and You said to them to come to inherit the land that You raised Your hand to give them.”

Nehemiah 9:15

Moses משה knew that the ROCK SELA סלע followed Israel in all their battles with the Amorite kings who were east of the Jordan.  The ROCK Sela the Messiah הסלע המשיח  was their fortress in the battles against the giant kings, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, helping Israel conquer them, their armies, their lands and their cities, and take them for a spoil and a possession.

Moses משה also knew the attributes of the ROCK SELA סלע  were like the attributes of the ROCK TSUR צור – the attributes of the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע.  From both of these you suck honey, and taste the sweetness of the Torah תורה.

“He made them (Israel) ride upon the high places of the earth, that they would eat the produce of the field. He caused them to suck honey from the rock (Sela), and oil from the flinty rock.”.

David the king דוד המלך also knew the strength and security that HASHEM provided through the ROCK סלע in the day of battle. He sings:

“And he said, “I love You, O Lord, my strength.

O Lord, my rock and my fortress and my rescuer;”

“And He drew me up out of the roaring pit, from the thick mire, and He set my feet upon a rockסלע , He established my steps.

Psalm 40:3-4

The Prophet Isaiah also extols the refuge of the ROCK

“Behold for righteousness shall a king reign, and over princes who rule with justice.

And the man shall be as a hiding- place from the wind and a shelter from the rain, as rivulets of water in an arid land, as the shade of a great rock in a weary land.”

              3.   Even אבן

The third Hebrew word for ROCK אבן (sometimes translated stone) appears in Genesis בראשית.  It has four major uses or essences.   These essences are interconnected, and work together to form a fabric which is the beautiful creation of HASHEM.  In this context they all refer to Messiah Ben David In actuality, they represent Messiah Ben David These four uses or essences are first: a foundation, second: an altar; third: worship, and fourth: the kingdom of HASHEM.

These four uses or essences of ROCK EVEN אבן are revealed in the Tanach תנך They begin with Israel.  In the first book of the Torahתורה , Jacob יעקוב leaves Beersheva, fleeing from his brother Esau.  He is journeying toward Padan Aram in order to take a wife.  In the evening he comes to a certain place which is Bethel בית אל.  He takes a ROCK אבן for a pillow, and he lays down with his head resting on the ROCK אבן. When he is sleeping with his head resting on the ROCK אבן, HASHEM appears to him in a dream.

“And Jacob listened to his father and his mother, and he went to Padan Aram פדן ארם.

And Jacob left Beersheba, and he went to Haran.

And he arrived at the place and lodged there because the sun had set, and he took one of the Rocks of the place and placed it under his head, and he lay down in that place.

And he dreamed, and behold! a ladder set up on the ground and its top reached to heaven; and behold, angels of God were ascending and descending upon it.

And behold, the Lord was standing over him, and He said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac; the land upon which you are lying to you I will give it and to your seed.

And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall gain strength westward and eastward and northward and southward; and through you shall be blessed all the families of the earth and through your seed.

And behold, I am with you, and I will guard you wherever you go, and I will restore you to this land, for I will not forsake you until I have done what I have spoken concerning you.”

And Jacob awakened from his sleep, and he said, “Indeed, the Lord is in this place, and I did not know [it].”

And he was frightened, and he said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Jacob יעקוב then takes the ROCK אבן on which his head had rested during the dream, and made an altar with it, and worshipped HASHEM.

“And Jacob arose early in the morning, and he took the ROCK אבן that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a monument, and he poured oil on top of it.

And he named the place Beth El, but Luz was originally the name of the city.”

Jacob יעקוב identifies the ROCK אבן as the Messiah המשיח later in his prophecy:

“But his bow was strongly established, and his arms were guided from the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob; from there the shepherd, the rock of Israel.”

The Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע refers to Jacob יעקוב as Yeshua  ישוע is about to launch his campaign to reveal the kingdom of G-d מלכות אלהים:

“Philip finds Nathanel, and says to him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the Torah, and the prophets, wrote, Yeshua of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

And Nathanael says to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see.

Yeshua sees Nathanel coming to him, and says of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile

Nathanel says to him, From where do you know me? Yeshua answers and says to him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.

Nathanel answers him, Rabbi, you are the Son of G-d; thou art King of Israel.

Yeshua answers and says to him, Because I said to you, I saw you underneath the fig tree, you believe?  You shall see greater things than these!

And he says to him,” Truly, truly, I say to you, You shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of G-d ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

The ROCK אבן appears again in the second book of the Torahתורה .   Moses משה and Israel ישראל are fighting a battle against  Amalek.   Amalek has launched an unexpected sudden sneak attack against Israel to prevent Israel from receiving the revelation of HASHEM and the Torah תורה at Sinai.  Mosesמשה  needs a foundation to support him while fighting the battle, so he is given a ROCK אבן to sit on.  Aaronאהרון  and Hurחור  stand on either side and hold up his arms that hold up the rod.

“Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

So Moses said to Joshua, “Pick men for us, and go out and fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”

Joshua did as Moses had told him, to fight against Amalek; then Moses, Aaron, and Hur ascended to the top of the hill.

It came to pass that when Moses would raise his hand, Israel would prevail, and when he would lay down his hand, Amalek would prevail.

Now Moses hands were heavy; so they took a ROCK אבן and placed it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one from this [side], and one from that [side]; so he was with his hands in faith until sunset.

Joshua weakened Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.”

When HASHEM gave the Torah תורה at Sinai, the ROCK אבן became the stones of the Urim and Thummim, and the twelve stones of the Breastplate חשן.

“And you shall take two shoham stones and engrave upon them the names of the sons of Israel.

Six of their names on one stone and the names of the remaining six on the second stone, according to their births.

Similar to the work of an engraver of gems, similar to the engravings of a seal, you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel; you shall make them enclosed in gold settings.

And you shall put the two stones upon the shoulder straps of the ephod as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, and Aaron shall carry their names before the Lord upon his two shoulders as a remembrance.”

When Joshua יהושע and Israel ישראל passed through the river Jordan הירדן, the ROCK changed from the SELAH סלע to the EVEN אבן.

“And Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it under the doorpost which is in the sanctuary of the Lord.

And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us; it shall be a witness against you, lest you deny your God.”

Samuel the prophet also bears witness to the ROCK

“And Samuel took one stone, and placed it between Mizpah and the peak Shen, and he called name of the ROCK Ebenezer, for he said, “Behold, the Lord has helped us.”

When Solomon שלומו built the First Temple in Jerusalem, he laid the foundation היסוד with precious stones, and garnished it with the precious rocks that David דוד his father had laid up for him for the building of the Temple בית המקדש.  These stones were like the stones in the breastplate of Aaron החשן.

“Then King David said to the entire assembly, “My son Solomon, whom God alone has chosen, is young and tender, and the work is great, for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.

And with all my strength I prepared for the House of my God, the gold for the [things of] gold, the silver for the [things of] silver, the copper for the [things of] copper, the iron for the [things of] iron, and the wood for the [things of] wood, onyx stones and filling stones, carbuncle stones and embroidery, and all precious stones and marble stones in abundance.”.

“And it was in the four hundred and eightieth year after the departure of the children of Israel from Egypt, in the fourth year, in the month Ziv, which is the second month of Solomon’s reign over Israel, when he began  to build the house of the Lord.

All these were of precious stones, according to the measures of hewn stones, sawed with saws within and without; and from the foundation up the coping, and from the outside until the great court.

And the foundation was of precious stones, great stones; stones of ten cubits and stones of eight cubits.”

“The Lord of Hosts-Him shall you fear, and He is your fear, and He shall be your dread..

And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a ROCK TSUR צור of stumbling and for a ROCK EVEN אבן of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a trap and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

And many shall stumble on it, and fall, and be broken, and be trapped, and be caught.”

The Prophet Zechariah identifies this ROCK אבן cornerstone ראש הפינה as the Messiah the Son of David המשיח בן דוד.

“Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your fellows that sit before you; for they are men that are a sign to be wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch.

For, behold, the ROCK EVEN אבן that I have set before Joshua; upon one ROCK EVEN אבן are seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving on it, says the Lord of Hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

On that day, says the Lord of Hosts, you shall call-each man to his neighbor-to come under his vine and under his fig tree.”

These eyes are the eyes of HASHEM that go throughout the whole earth to see whose heart is perfect toward Him, whose heart trusts in the Messiah

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth,

The Prophet Daniel further identifies this ROCK אבן as the Messiah the Son of David המשיח בן דוד. This is Yeshua ישוע who will return to break into pieces the Gentile Nations, and set up the kingdom of HASHEM over Israel and all the nations of the world, even to the ends of the earth.

“You were watching intently, and as you were watching, a ROCK EVEN אבן was cut out without hands, which struck with great force the image upon its feet that were made out of iron and clay, and broke them into pieces.

Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, was broken into pieces all together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the ROCK EVEN אבן that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.”

“And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall the sovereignty thereof be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Forasmuch as you saw that a ROCK EVEN אבן was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it smashed into pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold: the great God has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter,: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation of it is sure.”

The revelation and the interpretation by Daniel דניאל of the dream of the king of Babylon concurs with the prophecy of the Psalmist King David דוד המלף concerning his son the Messiah המשיח.

“The Lord will send rod of your might from Zion;

Rule in the midst of your enemies.

The Lord is on your right hand.

He has smashed kings on the day of His wrath.

He will execute justice upon the nations

He will fill the places with dead bodies.

They have become a heap of corpses.

He smashed the head that was over a great land.

From the river on the way he will drink;

Therefore, he will lift up his head.”
