HASHEM declares in Hosea 2:21-22
that He will betroth Israel to Himself forever.
וארשתיך לי לעולם
He then lists the four ways in which
He will betroth Israel to Himself.
These four ways correspond to
the four cups of Passover:
Cup #1 = “I will betroth you to me in righteousness. “
וארשתיך לי בצדק
Cup #2 = “I will betroth you to me in judgment.”
וארשתיך לי במשפט
Cup #3 = “I will betroth you to me in mercy.“
וארשתיך לי בחסד
Cup #4 = “I will betroth you to me in compassions.“
וארשתיך לי ב רחמים
The four cups of Passover are declared
in Exodus 6:6-7.
HASHEM begins the passage by declaring His Name
to the children of Israel.
“Wherefore say to the children of Israel
I am HASHEM.”
לכן אמר לבני ישראל
אני יהוה
Then HASHEM proceeds with His four declarations.
The first cup is the cup of Sanctification.
Cup #1 = “I will bring you out from under
the burdens of the Egyptians.”
והוצאתי אתכם מתחת
סבלת מצרים
This corresponds to the righteousness of HASHEM.
In Isaiah 42:6 HASHEM declares
“I, HASHEM, have called you in righteousness,
and I will hold your hand,
and I will keep you…”
אני יהוה קראתיך בצדק
ואחזק בידך ואצרך:
And He declares again in Psalm 85:13:
“Righteousness shall go before Him;
and shall set us in the way of His steps.”
צדק לפניו יהלך
וישים לדרך פעמיו:
This also is one of the attributes of the Messiah:
He is totally righteous in all the ways of the Torah.
Again He shouts in Psalm 132:9
“Let your priests be clothed with righteousness;
and let your holy ones shout for joy.”
כהניך ילבשו צדק
וחסידיך ירננו:
The second cup is the cup of Deliverance, or of the Plagues.
This corresponds to the judgment of HASHEM.
Cup #2 = “I will deliver you out of their bondage.”
והצלתי אתכם מעבדתם:
It is through judgment that HASHEM
delivered us from servitude to Pharaoh.
This also is one of the attributes
of the Messiah Yeshua משיח ישוע.
He took the judgments of HASHEM
in order to deliver us from the
servitude to satan.
The third cup is the cup of redemption.
This corresponds to the mercy of HASHEM.
Cup #3 = “And I will redeem you
with a stretched out arm,
and with great judgments.”
וגאלתי אתכם
בזרוע נטויה
ובשפטים גדלים:
This is the cup where the blood of the lamb is spilled.
It is also the communion of the Messiah Yeshua,
who redeemed us by his blood.
The Messiah Yeshua משיח ישוע said
“This is the cup of redemption in my blood,
Drink this in remembrance of me.”
כוס גאולה בדמי היא
שתו אותה בזכרוני
HASHEM declares to us
in Exodus 12:13:
“When I see the blood,
I will passover you,
and the Plague shall not be upon you
to destroy you.”
וראיתי את הדם
ופסחתי עלכם
ולא יהיה בכם
נגף למשחית:
The fourth cup is the cup of Praise.
This corresponds to the compassions of HASHEM.
Cup #4 = “And I will take you
to me for a people,
and I will be your G-d.”
ולקחתי אתכם לי לעם
והייתי לכם לאלהים:
This is the cup of the Messiah Yeshua משיח ישוע
as it is declared in Psalm 116:13.
“I will take the cup of YESHUA,
and call upon the name of HASHEM.”
כוס ישועות אשא
ובשם יהוה אקרא:
It is also the cup of Jerusalem because
HASHEM declares in Isaiah 62:7:
“I will make Jerusalem a Praise in all the earth.”
וישים ירושלם
תהלה בארץ:
Again it is declared in Psalm 48:1-2:
“Great is HASHEM, and greatly to be praised,
in the city of our G-d,
in the mountain of His holiness.
Beautiful for situation,
the joy of the whole earth ,
is mount Zion, on the sides of the north,
the city of the great King (the Messiah).”
גדול יהוה ומהלל מאד
בעיר אלהינו הר קדשו:
יפה נוף משוש כל הארץ
הר ציון ירכתי צפון
קרית מלך רב:
It is also the cup of the Kingdom of David
because it is said in the same words, in Psalm 145:3,
the Psalm of the Messianic Kingdom:
“Great is HASHEM, and greatly to be praised,
and His greatness is unsearchable.”
גדול יהוה ומהלל מאד
ולגדולתו אין חקר:
And HASHEM SAYS “I will have compassion on Jerusalem.”
Isaiah 40:1-2:
“Comfort you, comfort you my people,
says your G-d.
Speak to the heart of Jerusalem,
and cry to her…”
Isaiah 55:7-8:
“For a small moment have I forsaken you;
but with great compassions
will I gather you.
In a little wrath I hid
my face from you for a moment;
but with everlasting kindness
will I have compassion on you,
says HASHEM your redeemer.”
נחמו נחמו עמי
יאמר אלהיכם:
דברו על לב ירושלם
וקראו אליה…
ברגע קטן עזבתיך
וברחמים גדולים אקבצך:
בשצף קצף הסתרתי פני רגע ממך
ובחסד עולם רחמתיך
אמר גואלך יהוה:
It is also the cup of the resurrection for it is
declared in Psalm 118:17-21:
“I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of HASHEM.
HASHEM has chastened me sore:
but He has not given me over to death.
Open to me the gates of righteousness:
I will go into them,
and I will praise HASHEM.
THIS IS THE GATE OF HASHEM,
השער ליהוה
into which the righteous shall enter.
I will praise you,
for you have heard me,
and are bccome my YESHUA.“
לא אמות כי אחיה
ואספר מעשי יה:
יסר יסרני יה
ולמות לא נתנני:
פתחו לי שערי צדק
אבא בם אודה יה
זה השער ליהוה
צדיקים יבאו בו:
אודך כי עניתני
ותהי לי לישועה:
This shows that the Messiah Yeshua משיח ישוע
through his own personal resurrection
from among the dead,
has become the gate השער
through which he shall also raise
in Israel all those who trust in him,
and in the nations all those who trust in him,
from among the dead.”
Hosea 2:21-22 says a final time
“I will betroth you to me in faith.“
וארשתיך לי באמונה
HASHEM says in faith באמונה
because just as we must regard
ourselves as having personally
been brought out of Egypt by HASHEM,
SO MUST WE PERSONALLY TRUST
IN THE MESSIAH YESHUA משיח ישוע
IN ORDER TO RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE.
The result is the conclusion
described by Hosea:
“And they shall know HASHEM.”
וידעת את יהוה
This is a powerful personal
relationship with HASHEM
through his HOLY SPIRIT
as we go about our daily lives.
