The Revelation of the Name of the Messiah המשיח
In the Tanach תנך
The Tanach תנך enjoins us to know the name of the Messiah המשיח.
Who ascended to heaven and descended?
Who gathered wind in his fists?
Who wrapped the waters in a garment?
Who established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name
and what is the name of his son,
if you know?
מִי עָלָה שָׁמַיִם וַיֵּרַד
מִי אָסַף רוּחַ בְּחָפְנָיו
מִי צָרַר מַיִם בַּשִּׂמְלָה
מִי הֵקִים כָּל אַפְסֵי אָרֶץ
מַה שְּׁמוֹ
וּמַה שֶּׁם בְּנוֹ
כִּי תֵדָע
Proverbs 30:4 משלי ל:ד
Here this verse is referring to the name of HASHEM, which we know, because HASHEM revealed His name to Moses at the burning bush. It is also referring to the name of the son of HASHEM.
The Tanach תנך reveals the son the HASHEM to be the Messiah המשיח.
We see this when HASHEM speaks to David the king of Israel דוד מלך ישראל through Nathan the prophet.
When your days are finished and you shall lie with your forefathers, then I will raise up your seed that shall proceed from your body after you, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
and he shall be to Me a son
כִּי יִמְלְאוּ יָמֶיךָ וְשָׁכַבְתָּ אֶת אֲבֹתֶיךָ וַהֲקִימֹתִי אֶת זַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר יֵצֵא מִמֵּעֶיךָ וַהֲכִינֹתִי אֶת מַמְלַכְתּ
הוּא יִבְנֶה בַּיִת לִשְׁמִי וְכֹנַנְתִּי אֶת כִּסֵּא מַמְלַכְתּוֹ עַד עוֹלָם
אֲנִי אֶהְיֶה לּוֹ לְאָב
וְהוּא יִהְיֶה לִּי לְבֵן
II Samuel 7:12-14 שמואל ב: ז:יב-יד
This son is the Messiah המשיח from the seed of David.
The Messiah המשיח is again identified as the son of HASHEM in the Psalm.
Kings of a land stand up, and nobles take counsel together against the Lord and against His Messiah?
Then He speaks to them in His wrath; and He frightens them with His sore displeasure.
“But I have enthroned My king on Zion, My holy mount.”
I will tell of the decree; The Lord said to me,
“You are My son;
this day have I begotten you.
Request of Me, and I will make nations your inheritance, and the ends of the earth your possession.”
יִתְיַצְּבוּ מַלְכֵי אֶרֶץ וְרוֹזְנִים נוֹסְדוּ יָחַד עַל יְהֹוָה וְעַל מְשִׁיחו
אָז יְדַבֵּר אֵלֵימוֹ בְאַפּוֹ וּבַחֲרוֹנוֹ יְבַהֲלֵמוֹ
וַאֲנִי נָסַכְתִּי מַלְכִּי עַל צִיּוֹן הַר קָדְשִׁי
אֲסַפְּרָה אֶל חֹק
יְהֹוָה אָמַר אֵלַי
בְּנִי אַתָּה
אֲנִי הַיּוֹם יְלִדְתִּיךָ
שְׁאַל מִמֶּנִּי וְאֶתְּנָה גוֹיִם נַחֲלָתֶךָ וַאֲחֻזָּתְךָ אַפְסֵי אָרֶץ
Psalm 2:2,5-8 תהלים ב:ב,ה-ח
Now that the son of HASEM is revealed in the Tanach התנך to be the the Messiah המשיח, the question that remains to be answered is “What is His name?”
This name is hidden, but the the Tanach התנך gives clues so that it can be searched out.
The glory of God is to conceal a matter,
whereas the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
כְּבֹד אֱלֹהִים הַסְתֵּר דָּבָר
וּכְבֹד מְלָכִים חֲקֹר דָּבָר
Proverbs 25:2 משלי כה:ב
The name of the Messiah המשיח is associated with the purpose which he comes to accomplish.
The Messiah המשיח is the deliverer, the savior, the redeemer of Israel, and by extension also of the Gentile nations.
Since the Messiah המשיחwill accomplish the salvation of Israel and the rest of the nations הגוים, the Scriptures and prophesies themselves reveal his name.
The prophet Isaiah makes this clear when he speaks about the Messiah משיח:
And He said, “It is too light for you to be My servant, to establish the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the besieged of Israel, but I will make you a light of nations, so that My salvation shall be until the end of the earth.”
וַיֹּאמֶר נָקֵל מִהְיוֹתְךָ לִי עֶבֶד לְהָקִים אֶת שִׁבְטֵי יַעֲקֹב וּנְצוּרֵי (כתיב וּנְציּרֵי) יִשְׂרָאֵל לְהָשִׁיב וּנְתַתִּיךָ לְאוֹר גּוֹיִם לִהְיוֹת יְשׁוּעָתִי עַד קְצֵה הָאָרֶץ
Isaiah 49:6 ישעיה מט:ו
In this passage the prophet associates the name of the Messiah המשיחwith his purpose which is salvation or Yeshua ישוע.
This is further corroborated by the prophetic psalm:
A song. Sing to the Lord a new song, for He performed wonders; His right hand and His holy arm have saved Him.
The Lord has made known His salvation; (Yeshuato ישועתו )
to the eyes of the nations He has revealed His righteousness
He remembered His kindness and His faith to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. (Yeshuat Elokeino)
אמִזְמוֹר שִׁירוּ לַיהֹוָה שִׁיר חָדָשׁ כִּי נִפְלָאוֹת עָשָׂה
הוֹשִׁיעָה לּוֹ יְמִינוֹ וּזְרוֹעַ קָדְשׁוֹ
הוֹדִיעַ יְהֹוָה יְשׁוּעָתוֹ
לְעֵינֵי הַגּוֹיִם גִּלָּה צִדְקָתוֹ
זָכַר חַסְדּוֹ וֶאֱמוּנָתוֹ לְבֵית יִשְׂרָאֵל
רָאוּ כָל אַפְסֵי אָרֶץ אֵת יְשׁוּעַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ
Psalm 98:1-3 תהלים צח:א-ג
In this passage there are multiple references to the Messiah המשיח. The arm of HASHEM; the mercy and faith to the house of Israel (which is a reference to the throne of David over Israel); the righteousness of HASHEM appearing to the Gentiles; and all the ends of the earth beholding the salvation of HASHEM. In the midst of all this, HASHEM makes known the Messiah’s name.
HASHEM has made known His salvation; (Yeshuato ישועתו )
הוֹדִיעַ יְהֹוָה יְשׁוּעָתוֹ
HASHEM is Israel’s strength and Israel’s song. Here the name of the Messiah המשיח appears (Yeshua ישועה). He is Israel’s strength, and Israel’s song.
“Behold: G-D my Yeshua (salvation), I shall trust and not fear;
For HASHEM HASHEM is my strength and my song.
And He is become to me Yeshua (salvation).”
And you shall draw water with joy from the fountains of Yeshua (salvation).
הִנֵּה אֵל יְשׁוּעָתִי
אֶבְטַח וְלֹא אֶפְחָד
כִּי עָזִּי וְזִמְרָת יָהּ יְהֹוָה וַיְהִי לִי לִישׁוּעָה
וּשְׁאַבְתֶּם מַיִם בְּשָׂשׂוֹן מִמַּעַיְנֵי הַיְשׁוּעָה
Isaiah 12:2-3 ישעיה יב:ב-ג
And again it is written in the Psalms:
G-d is my strength and my song, and is become to me Yeshua (salvation).
עָזִּי וְזִמְרָת יָהּ וַיְהִי לִי לִישׁוּעָה
Psalm 118:14 תהלים קיח:יד
Again the prophet Isaiah declares the Messiah המשיח:
HASHEM has revealed His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth shall see the Yeshua (salvation) of our G-d.
חָשַׂף יְהֹוָה אֶת זְרוֹעַ קָדְשׁוֹ לְעֵינֵי כָּל הַגּוֹיִם
וְרָאוּ כָּל אַפְסֵי אָרֶץ אֵת יְשׁוּעַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ
Isaiah 52:10 ישעיה נב:י
For this reason the name of Yeshua ישועה the Messiah המשיח is to be heralded among the nations of the earth:
Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless His name,
announce His Yeshua (salvation) from day to day.
Tell of His glory among the nations, among all peoples His wonders.
For the Lord is great and very much praised; He is feared over all divine powers.
שִׁירוּ לַיהֹוָה שִׁיר חָדָשׁ שִׁירוּ לַיהֹוָה כָּל הָאָרֶץ
שִׁירוּ לַיהֹוָה בָּרֲכוּ שְׁמוֹ
בַּשְּׂרוּ מִיּוֹם לְיוֹם יְשׁוּעָתוֹ
סַפְּרוּ בַגּוֹיִם כְּבוֹדוֹ בְּכָל הָעַמִּים נִפְלְאוֹתָיו
כִּי גָדוֹל יְהֹוָה וּמְהֻלָּל מְאֹד נוֹרָא הוּא עַל כָּל אֱלֹהִים
Psalms 96:1-4 תהלים צו:א-ד
The name of Yeshua ישועה the Messiah המשיח is also to be heralded in Israel, in Zion:
How beautiful are the feet of the herald on the mountains, announcing peace, heralding good tidings, announcing Yeshua (salvation),
saying to Zion, “Your God has manifested His kingdom.”
מַה נָּאווּ עַל הֶהָרִים רַגְלֵי מְבַשֵּׂר
מַשְׁמִיעַ שָׁלוֹם מְבַשֵּׂר טוֹב מַשְׁמִיעַ יְשׁוּעָה
אֹמֵר לְצִיּוֹן מָלַךְ אֱלֹהָיִךְ
Isaiah 52:7 ישעיה נב:ז
The announcing of the name of Yeshua is announcing the name of the Messiah המשיח, and the kingdom of David will be manifested.
Jacob saw the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע and the kingdom of David over Israel when he said:
For Your Yeshua (salvation), I hope, O Lord HASHEM!
לִישׁוּעָתְךָ קִוִּיתִי יְהֹוָה
Genesis 49:18 בראשית מט:יח
All in Israel who trust in the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישוע, HASHEM WILL CLOTHE WITH THE SPLENDOR OF HIS BEAUTY.
For the HASHEM takes delight in His people;
He will beautify the humble with Yeshua (salvation).
כִּי רוֹצֶה יְהֹוָה בְּעַמּוֹ
יְפָאֵר עֲנָוִים בִּישׁוּעָה
