SHEMONEH ESREI – AMIDAH and THE MESSIAH
שמונה עשרה – עמידה והמשיח
The Shemoneh Esrei was initiated in ancient times. It is prophetic in nature. It has layers of revelation relevant to the past and to the future. It is also applicable to our daily lives and to our daily routines. It is especially wondrous in its revelation of the Messiah of Israel. It has three sections that contain eighteen blessings. The first and third sections each contain three blessings. The middle section contains twelve blessings with a thirteenth blessing that was added later. But the composite whole is still considered to be eighteen blessings. These blessings will be elucidated in their order.
This blessing affirms the promises in the covenant that HASHEM made with our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when He called them out of the idolatry of the nations and gave them the land of Israel.
By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he went.
By faith he became a sojourner in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
בָּאֱמוּנָה שָׁמַע אַבְרָהָם כַּאֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא לָלֶכֶת אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יִירָשֶׁנָּה וַיֵּצֵא וְלא־יָדַע אָנָא יָבוֹא
בָּאֱמוּנָה הָיָה גֵר בְּאֶרֶץ הַהַבְטָחָה כְּמוֹ בְנָכְרִיָּה וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאהָלִים הוּא וְיִצְחָק וְיַעֲקוב אֲשֶׁר־יָרְשׁוּ עִמּוֹ הַהַבְטָחָה הַהִיא
HASHEM chose them to describe His great name to Moses and to all the succeeding generations of Israel.
And God said moreover unto Moses: ‘Thus shalt you say to the children of Israel: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you; this is My name for ever, and this is My memorial unto all generations.
וַיֹּאמֶר עוֹד אֱלֹהִים אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, כֹּה-תֹאמַר אֶל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֵיכֶם אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם אֱלֹהֵי יִצְחָק וֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב, שְׁלָחַנִי אֲלֵיכֶם; זֶה-שְּׁמִי לְעֹלָם, וְזֶה זִכְרִי לְדֹר דֹּר
It is through the seed of our fathers that the Messiah המשיח comes. He does not come through a gentile nation. Abraham saw this day of the Messiah המשיח and was glad. This leads us into the next blessing.
Blessing #2 The Resurrection of the Dead
This blessing affirms the pillar of the Jewish Faith: HASHEM will raise the dead. This resurrection will be accomplished through the Messiah המשיח. Abraham Avinu affirms this at the Akeidah.
By faith Abraham, being tried, offered up Isaac: indeed, he that had gladly received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
even he to whom it was said, In Isaac shall your seed be called:
accounting that God is able to raise up, even from the dead; from whence he did also in a figure receive him back.
בָּאֱמוּנָה הָיָה מַעֲלֶה אַבְרָהָם אֶת־יִצְחָק כַּאֲשֶׁר נֻסָּה וְאֶת־יְחִידוֹ יַקְרִיב הַמְקַבֵּל אֶת־הַהַבְטָחוֹת
אֲשֶׁר נֶאֱמַר־לוֹ כִּי בְיִצְחָק יִקָּרֵא לְךָ זָרַע
וַיַּחֲשׁוב בְּלִבּוֹ כִּי יָכוֹל אֱלוהִים לְהַחֲיוֹת גַּם אֶת־הַמֵּתִים עַל־כֵּן גַּם־הוּשַׁב אֵלָיו לִהְיוֹת לְמָשָׁל
This blessing gives us the bold vision of what Abraham saw by boldly naming for us the name of the Messiah המשיח.
Yeshua ישועה is the name of the Messiah המשיח ! This name is coupled with צמח because this word Tsemach צמח describes the nature and origin of the Messiah המשיח as springing or sprouting forth from the seed of David or Jesse David’s father.-David Ben Jesse דוד בן ישי . This is according to the words of the prophet:
And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a twig shall grow forth out of his roots
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the root of Jesse, that stands for an ensign of the peoples, unto him shall the nations seek; and his resting-place shall be glorious
וְיָצָא חֹטֶר מִגֵּזַע יִשָׁי; וְנֵצֶר מִשָּׁרָשָׁיו יִפְרֶה
וְנָחָה עָלָיו רוּחַ יְהוָה–רוּחַ חָכְמָה וּבִינָה, רוּחַ עֵצָה וּגְבוּרָה, רוּחַ דַּעַת, וְיִרְאַת יְהוָה
וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, שֹׁרֶשׁ יִשַׁי אֲשֶׁר עֹמֵד לְנֵס עַמִּים, אֵלָיו גּוֹיִם יִדְרֹשׁוּ; וְהָיְתָה מְנֻחָתוֹ, כָּבוֹד
The Prophet Zechariah also boldly confirms the identity of the Messiah המשיח:
Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: Behold, a man whose name is Tsemach, and who shall shoot up out of his place, and build the temple of the LORD
even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and there shall be a priest before his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה-אִישׁ צֶמַח שְׁמוֹ, וּמִתַּחְתָּיו יִצְמָח, וּבָנָה אֶת-הֵיכַל יְהוָה
וְהוּא יִבְנֶה אֶת-הֵיכַל יְהוָה, וְהוּא-יִשָּׂא הוֹד, וְיָשַׁב וּמָשַׁל עַל-כִּסְאוֹ; וְהָיָה כֹהֵן עַל-כִּסְאוֹ, וַעֲצַת שָׁלוֹם תִּהְיֶה בֵּין שְׁנֵיהֶם
AT this point the Kedushah קדושה is inserted into the second blessing because the Resurrection of the Dead can only be done by HASHEM. The Resurrection is initiated through His incomparable, ineffable, totally engulfing holiness. This was accomplished and sealed by the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישועה when he rose from the dead, being the firstborn of the resurrection.
The blessing of the holiness of HASHEM is affirmed by our lips.
O Lord, open my lips; and my mouth shall declare Your praise.
אֲדֹנָי שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח; וּפִי, יַגִּיד תְּהִלָּתֶךָ
Also it is written:
Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits
בָּרְכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת-יְהוָה; וְכָל-קְרָבַי אֶת-שֵׁם קָדְשׁוֹ
בָּרְכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת-יְהוָה; וְאַל-תִּשְׁכְּחִי כָּל-גְּמוּלָיו
This carries us over to the second section, the middle section, which contains our requests. The fourth blessing is the beginning of this section.
In the holiness of HASHEM, and through the Messiah המשיח, we are gifted and endued with knowledge דעה, understanding בינה, and discernment השכל. By these gifts we can function and prosper during each day that we live. These gifts are not natural, but they are only found in the Messiah המשיח. They come by the Spirit of HASHEM, and they are distributed by HASHEM through His holiness. As it is written:
And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD; and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither decide after the hearing of his ears;
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the land
וַהֲרִיחוֹ בְּיִרְאַת יְהוָה; וְלֹא-לְמַרְאֵה עֵינָיו יִשְׁפּוֹט, וְלֹא-לְמִשְׁמַע אָזְנָיו יוֹכִיחַ
וְשָׁפַט בְּצֶדֶק דַּלִּים, וְהוֹכִיחַ בְּמִישׁוֹר לְעַנְוֵי-אָרֶץ
These gifts are distributed, activated, and operated only by the Spirit of G-d רוח אלוהים only in the Messiah המשיח. As it is written:
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.
וְנָחָה עָלָיו רוּחַ יְהוָה–רוּחַ חָכְמָה וּבִינָה, רוּחַ עֵצָה וּגְבוּרָה, רוּחַ דַּעַת וְיִרְאַת יְהוָה
This blessing is repentance from our own thoughts, and our willful selfish ways. זדים.
As it is written:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the man of iniquity his thoughts; and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have compassion upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
יַעֲזֹב רָשָׁע דַּרְכּוֹ, וְאִישׁ אָוֶן מַחְשְׁבֹתָיו; וְיָשֹׁב אֶל-יְהוָה וִירַחֲמֵהוּ, וְאֶל-אֱלֹהֵינוּ כִּי-יַרְבֶּה לִסְלוֹחַ
כִּי לֹא מַחְשְׁבוֹתַי מַחְשְׁבוֹתֵיכֶם, וְלֹא דַרְכֵיכֶם דְּרָכָי–נְאֻם, יְהוָה
כִּי-גָבְהוּ שָׁמַיִם מֵאָרֶץ–כֵּן גָּבְהוּ דְרָכַי מִדַּרְכֵיכֶם, וּמַחְשְׁבֹתַי מִמַּחְשְׁבֹתֵיכֶם
Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be:
and they that are in the flesh cannot please G-d.
מִפְּנֵי שֶׁמַּחֲשֶׁבֶת הַבָּשָׂר רַק שִׂנְאַת אֱלוהִים הִיא בַּאֲשֶׁר לא תִשְׁתַּעְבֵּד לְתוֹרַת הָאֱלוהִים וְאַף לא תוּכָל
כָּל־אֲשֶׁר בַּבָּשָׂר יְסוֹדָם לא יוּכְלוּ לִהְיוֹת רְצוּיִם לֵאלוהִים
If we are led by our own voice, and not by the voice of HASHEM, we transgress.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins, that they may not have dominion over me;
then shall I be faultless, and I shall be clear from great transgression.
גַּם מִזֵּדִים, חֲשֹׂךְ עַבְדֶּךָ– אַל-יִמְשְׁלוּ-בִי אָז אֵיתָם;
וְנִקֵּיתִי מִפֶּשַׁע רָב
We also repent from the sin of our fathers which they sinned when they did not listen to the voice of HASHEM:
But My people did not listen to My voice; and Israel would have none of Me.
So I let them go after the stubbornness of their heart, that they might walk in their own counsels.
Oh that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!
I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn My hand against their adversaries.
וְלֹא-שָׁמַע עַמִּי לְקוֹלִי וְיִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא-אָבָה לִי
וָאֲשַׁלְּחֵהוּ, בִּשְׁרִירוּת לִבָּם; יֵלְכוּ בְּמוֹעֲצוֹתֵיהֶם
לוּ–עַמִּי, שֹׁמֵעַ לִי; יִשְׂרָאֵל, בִּדְרָכַי יְהַלֵּכוּ
כִּמְעַט, אוֹיְבֵיהֶם אַכְנִיעַ; וְעַל צָרֵיהֶם, אָשִׁיב יָדִי
Again it is written:
To-day, if you hear His voice!
Harden not your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness
When your fathers tried Me, proved Me, even though they saw My work.
הַיּוֹם, אִם-בְּקֹלוֹ תִשְׁמָעוּ
אַל-תַּקְשׁוּ לְבַבְכֶם, כִּמְרִיבָה; כְּיוֹם מַסָּה, בַּמִּדְבָּר
אֲשֶׁר נִסּוּנִי אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם: בְּחָנוּנִי, גַּם-רָאוּ פָעֳלִי
The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
קוֹל-יְהוָה בַּכֹּחַ; קוֹל יְהוָה, בֶּהָדָר
Again in Job it is written:
Receive, please, Torah from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.
If you return to the Almighty, you shalt be built up–if you put far away perverse judgments far from your tents
קַח-נָא מִפִּיו תּוֹרָה; וְשִׂים אֲמָרָיו, בִּלְבָבֶךָ
אִם-תָּשׁוּב עַד-שַׁדַּי, תִּבָּנֶה; תַּרְחִיק עַוְלָה, מֵאָהֳלֶךָ
The blood of the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ושועה , the ever active Kaparah כפרה, cleanses us moment by moment from all sin, all transgressions, and all iniquities, and completely frees us from all their destructive power, so that we have fellowship with HASHEM and also with one another.
if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Yeshua his Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
אִם־נִתְהַלֵּךְ בָּאוֹר כַּאֲשֶׁר הוּא בָאוֹר הִנֵּה נִתְחַבַּרְנוּ יָחַד וְדַם־יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ בְּנוֹ יְטַהֲרֵנוּ מִכָּל־חֵטְא
וְאִם־נִתְוַדֶּה אֶת־חַטּואתֵינוּ נֶאֱמָן הוּא וְצַדִּיק לִסְלוחַ לְחַטּואתֵינוּ וּלְטַהֲרֵנוּ מִכָּל־עָוֹן
This blessing invokes the redeeming power of the Messiah המשיח day by day, as we progress in time to the final redemption of our bodies.
But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the LORD, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of G-d.
וַאֲנַחְנוּ כֻלָּנוּ רׂאִים בַּמַּרְאָה אֶת־כְּבוֹד הָאָדוֹן וּפָנֵינוּ מְגֻלִּים וְנִתְהַפֵּךְ לְעֶצֶם דְּמוּת הַהִיא מִכָּבוֹד לְכָבוֹד כְּמִי שֶׁמִּתְחַלֵּף מֵאֵת אֲדוֹן הָרוּח אלוהיםַ
For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.
For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven:
if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked
For indeed we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened; not for that we should be unclothed, but that our mortal bodies should be clothed by our immortal bodies, that what is mortal may be swallowed up of life.
הֵן יָדַעְנוּ כִּי בֵּהָרֵס בֵּית אָהֳלֵנוּ אֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ יֶשׁ־לָנוּ בִנְיָן מֵאֵת הָאֱלוהִים בַּיִת אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ מַעֲשֵׂה יָדַיִם וְהוּא קַיָּם לְעוֹלָם בַּשָּׁמָיִם
כִּי גַם־עַתָּה נֶאֱנָחִים וְנִכְסָפִים אֲנַחְנוּ לְהִתְעַטֵּף בְּבֵיתֵנוּ אֲשֶׁר מִן־הַשָּׁמָיִם
וּבִלְבַד שֶׁאַחֲרֵי לְבַשְׁנֻהוּ לא נִמָּצֵא עֲרֻמִּים
כִּי בְּאָהֳלֵנוּ זֶה נֵאָנַח תַּחַת הַמַּשָּׂא מִתְאַוִּים לְהִתְעַטֵּף וְלא לִפְשׁוט לְמַעַן יְבֻלַּע הַמָּוֶת עַל־יְדֵי הַחַיִּים
This blessing intercedes for the healing power of HASHEM, and health for our bodies, as we function day by day. Healing emanates from the throne of HASHEM, and from the Messiah Yeshua המשיח ישועה who is seated at His right hand.
The LORD said unto my lord: ‘Sit at My right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool
נְאֻם יְהוָה, לַאדֹנִי–שֵׁב לִימִינִי עַד-אָשִׁית אֹיְבֶיךָ הֲדֹם לְרַגְלֶיךָ
They that were troubled with unclean spirits were healed.
And the entire multitude sought to touch him; for power came forth from him, and healed them all.
וְגַם־הַמְעֻנִּים בְּרוּחוֹת טְמֵאוֹת וַיֵּרָפֵאוּ
וְכָל־הֶהָמוֹן מְבַקְשִׁים לָגַעַת בּוֹ כִּי גְבוּרָה יָצְאָה מֵאִתּוֹ וְרָפְאָה אֶת־כֻּלָּם
And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,
and they besought him that they might only touch the border of his garment: and as many as touched were made whole.
וַיַּכִּירוּ אותוֹ אַנְשֵׁי הַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ אֶל־כָּל־סְבִיבוֹתֵיהֶם וַיָּבִיאוּ אֵלָיו אֵת כָּל־הַחוֹלִים
וַיְבַקְשׁוּ מִמֶּנּוּ רַק לִנְגּועַ בִּכְנַף בִּגְדוֹ וְכָל־הַנּוגְעִים נוֹשָׁעוּ
This blessing asks HASHEM for His blessing as we walk in His Spirit. This blessing will result in prosperity. As Moses entreated HASHEM:
Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your ways, that I may know You, to the end that I may find grace in Your sight; and consider that this nation is Your people.’
And He said: ‘My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.
וְעַתָּה אִם-נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ, הוֹדִעֵנִי נָא אֶת-דְּרָכֶךָ, וְאֵדָעֲךָ, לְמַעַן אֶמְצָא-חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ; וּרְאֵה, כִּי עַמְּךָ הַגּוֹי הַזֶּה
וַיֹּאמַר: פָּנַי יֵלֵכוּ, וַהֲנִחֹתִי לָךְ
Also Solomon שלומו says in Kohelet קהלת:
Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour–this is the gift of G-d.
For let him remember the days of his life that they are not many; for G-d answers him in the joy of his heart.
גַּם כָּל-הָאָדָם אֲשֶׁר נָתַן-לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִים עֹשֶׁר וּנְכָסִים וְהִשְׁלִיטוֹ לֶאֱכֹל מִמֶּנּוּ, וְלָשֵׂאת אֶת-חֶלְקוֹ, וְלִשְׂמֹחַ, בַּעֲמָלוֹ–זֹה, מַתַּת אֱלֹהִים הִיא
כִּי לֹא הַרְבֵּה, יִזְכֹּר אֶת-יְמֵי חַיָּיו: כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים מַעֲנֶה, בְּשִׂמְחַת לִבּוֹ
Also it is written in the Psalms:
You crown the year with Your goodness; and Your paths drop fatness
עִטַּרְתָּ שְׁנַת טוֹבָתֶךָ; וּמַעְגָּלֶיךָ יִרְעֲפוּן דָּשֶׁן
It is written in Job:
And you shall lay up gold as the dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks;
And the Almighty be your defense (treasure), and you shall have plenty of silver.
Then you shall have your delight in the Almighty, and you shalt lift up your face unto G-d.
וְשִׁית-עַל-עָפָר בָּצֶר; וּבצוּר נְחָלִים אוֹפִיר
וְהָיָה שַׁדַּי בְּצָרֶיךָ; וְכֶסֶף תּוֹעָפוֹת לָךְ
כִּי-אָז עַל-שַׁדַּי תִּתְעַנָּג; וְתִשָּׂא אֶל-אֱלוֹהַּ פָּנֶיךָ
Again it is written,
But his delight is in the Torah of the LORD; and in His Torah he meditates day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by streams of water,
that brings forth its fruit in its season, and whose leaf does not wither; and in whatsoever he does he shall prosper.
כִּי אִם בְּתוֹרַת יְהוָה, חֶפְצו; וּבְתוֹרָתוֹ יֶהְגֶּה יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה
וְהָיָה– כְּעֵץ, שָׁתוּל עַל-פַּלְגֵי-מָיִם
אֲשֶׁר פִּרְיוֹ יִתֵּן בְּעִתּוֹ–וְעָלֵהוּ לֹא-יִבּוֹל; וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר-יַעֲשֶׂה יַצְלִיחַ
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they who love you shall prosper
שַׁאֲלוּ שְׁלוֹם יְרוּשָׁלִָם; יִשְׁלָיוּ, אֹהֲבָיִךְ
This blessing carries our prosperity to its fullest which is in the land of Israel ארץ ישראל. HASHEM gave the land to our fathers and their seed as an inheritance forever. Jerusalem also is its capital, the holy city of HASHEM, and the city of the great king.
As it is written:
The LORD builds up Jerusalem, He gathers together the dispersed of Israel;
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
בּוֹנֵה יְרוּשָׁלִַם יְהוָה; נִדְחֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יְכַנֵּס
הָרֹפֵא, לִשְׁבוּרֵי לֵב; וּמְחַבֵּשׁ, לְעַצְּבוֹתָם
Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, in the city of our God, in His holy mountain;
Beautiful in situation, the joy of the whole earth;
even mount Zion, the uttermost parts of the north, the city of the great King.
גָּדוֹל יְהוָה וּמְהֻלָּל מְאֹד– בְּעִיר אֱלֹהֵינוּ, הַר-קָדְשׁוֹ
יְפֵה נוֹף, מְשׂוֹשׂ כָּל-הָאָרֶץ:
הַר-צִיּוֹן, יַרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן; קִרְיַת, מֶלֶךְ רָב
And G-d appeared unto Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.
And G-d said to him: ‘Your name is Jacob: Your name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be Your name’; and He called his name Israel.
And G-d said to him: ‘I am G-d Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins;
and the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, to you I will give it, and to your seed after you will I give the land.’
וַיֵּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶל-יַעֲקֹב עוֹד, בְּבֹאוֹ מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם; וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתוֹ
וַיֹּאמֶר-לוֹ אֱלֹהִים, שִׁמְךָ יַעֲקֹב: לֹא-יִקָּרֵא שִׁמְךָ עוֹד יַעֲקֹב, כִּי אִם-יִשְׂרָאֵל יִהְיֶה שְׁמֶךָ, וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ, יִשְׂרָאֵל
וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אֱלֹהִים אֲנִי אֵל שַׁדַּי, פְּרֵה וּרְבֵה–גּוֹי וּקְהַל גּוֹיִם, יִהְיֶה מִמֶּךָּ; וּמְלָכִים, מֵחֲלָצֶיךָ יֵצֵאוּ
וְאֶת-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לְאַבְרָהָם וּלְיִצְחָק–לְךָ אֶתְּנֶנָּה; וּלְזַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ, אֶתֵּן אֶת-הָאָרֶץ
This carries the blessing of King David מלך דוד when the Messiah המשיח establishes thrones over the twelve tribes of Israel, and he extends his rule over the whole earth.
Jerusalem, that is built as a city that is compact together;
Where the tribes went up, even the tribes of the LORD, as a testimony unto Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
For there were set thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.
יְרוּשָׁלִַם הַבְּנוּיָה– כְּעִיר, שֶׁחֻבְּרָה-לָּהּ יַחְדָּו
שֶׁשָּׁם עָלוּ שְׁבָטִים, שִׁבְטֵי-יָהּ–עֵדוּת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל: לְהֹדוֹת, לְשֵׁם יְהוָה
כִּי שָׁמָּה, יָשְׁבוּ כִסְאוֹת לְמִשְׁפָּט: כִּסְאוֹת, לְבֵית דָּוִד
Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, praise is comely for the upright.
For the word of the LORD is upright; and all His work is done in faithfulness.
He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.
רַנְּנוּ צַדִּיקִים, בַּיהוָה; לַיְשָׁרִים, נָאוָה תְהִלָּה
כִּי-יָשָׁר דְּבַר-יְהוָה; וְכָל-מַעֲשֵׂהוּ, בֶּאֱמוּנָה
אֹהֵב, צְדָקָה וּמִשְׁפָּט; חֶסֶד יְהוָה, מָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ
Clouds and darkness are round about Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
עָנָן וַעֲרָפֶל סְבִיבָיו; צֶדֶק וּמִשְׁפָּט, מְכוֹן כִּסְאוֹ
The strength also of the king who loves justice–
You have established equity, You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
וְעֹז מֶלֶךְ, מִשְׁפָּט אָהֵב
אַתָּה, כּוֹנַנְתָּ מֵישָׁרִים; מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה, בְּיַעֲקֹב אַתָּה עָשִׂיתָ
This blessing calls for the subjugation and sometimes the destruction by HASHEM of our enemies who would attempt to destroy us.
If it had not been the LORD who was for us’, let Israel now say;
‘If it had not been the LORD who was for us, when men rose up against us,
Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul;
Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
לוּלֵי יְהוָה, שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ– יֹאמַר-נָא, יִשְׂרָאֵל
לוּלֵי יְהוָה, שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ– בְּקוּם עָלֵינוּ אָדָם
אֲזַי, חַיִּים בְּלָעוּנוּ– בַּחֲרוֹת אַפָּם בָּנוּ
אֲזַי הַמַּיִם שְׁטָפוּנוּ– נַחְלָה עָבַר עַל-נַפְשֵׁנוּ
אֲזַי עָבַר עַל-נַפְשֵׁנוּ– הַמַּיִם הַזֵּידוֹנִים
בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה– שֶׁלֹּא נְתָנָנוּ טֶרֶף לְשִׁנֵּיהֶם
נַפְשֵׁנוּ– כְּצִפּוֹר נִמְלְטָה, מִפַּח יוֹקְשִׁים:
הַפַּח נִשְׁבָּר, וַאֲנַחְנוּ נִמְלָטְנוּ
עֶזְרֵנוּ בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה– עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ
Also the idolatrous seed of Esau and Amalek have stood up to destroy Israel in many generations.
The wicked one has stood up against Israel:
And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
וַיַּעֲמֹד שָׂטָן, עַל-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיָּסֶת, אֶת-דָּוִיד, לִמְנוֹת, אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Adonai-nissi.
And he said: ‘The hand upon the throne of the LORD: the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.’
וַיִּבֶן מֹשֶׁה, מִזְבֵּחַ; וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, יְהוָה נִסִּי
וַיֹּאמֶר, כִּי-יָד עַל-כֵּס יָהּ, מִלְחָמָה לַיהוָה, בַּעֲמָלֵק–מִדֹּר, דֹּר
Remember, O LORD, against the children of Edom the day of Jerusalem;
who said: ‘Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof.’
זְכֹר יְהוָה, לִבְנֵי אֱדוֹם– אֵת, יוֹם יְרוּשָׁלִָם:
הָאֹמְרִים, עָרוּ עָרוּ– עַד, הַיְסוֹד בָּהּ
But HASHEM turns the battle to the victory and triumph of His righteous ones!
For You, LORD, are most high above all the earth You are exalted far above all gods.
O you that love the LORD, hate evil; He preserves the souls of His own who hope in His mercy; He delivered them out of the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
Be glad in the LORD, you righteous; and give thanks to His holy name.
כִּי-אַתָּה יְהוָה, עֶלְיוֹן עַל-כָּל-הָאָרֶץ;
מְאֹד נַעֲלֵיתָ, עַל-כָּל-אֱלֹהִים
אֹהֲבֵי יְהוָה, שִׂנְאוּ-רָע
שֹׁמֵר נַפְשׁוֹת חֲסִידָיו; מִיַּד רְשָׁעִים, יַצִּילֵם
אוֹר זָרֻעַ לַצַּדִּיק; וּלְיִשְׁרֵי-לֵב שִׂמְחָה
שִׂמְחוּ צַדִּיקִים, בַּיהוָה; וְהוֹדוּ, לְזֵכֶר קָדְשׁוֹ
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
but we will make mention of the name of the LORD our G-d.
They are bowed down and fallen; but we are risen, and stand upright.
אֵלֶּה בָרֶכֶב, וְאֵלֶּה בַסּוּסִים;
וַאֲנַחְנוּ, בְּשֵׁם-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ נַזְכִּיר
הֵמָּה, כָּרְעוּ וְנָפָלוּ; וַאֲנַחְנוּ קַּמְנוּ, וַנִּתְעוֹדָד
This blessing is for the righteous ones who walk by the Holy Spirit of HASHEM, and thus walk in the footsteps of His righteous servant, the Messiah המשיח.
Say of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
אִמְרוּ צַדִּיק, כִּי-טוֹב: כִּי-פְרִי מַעַלְלֵיהֶם, יֹאכֵלוּ
When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice;
בִּרְבוֹת צַדִּיקִים, יִשְׂמַח הָעָם
Behold, the days come, declares the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous shoot, and he shall reign as king and prosper, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.
הִנֵּה יָמִים בָּאִים נְאֻם-יְהוָה, וַהֲקִמֹתִי לְדָוִד צֶמַח צַדִּיק; וּמָלַךְ מֶלֶךְ וְהִשְׂכִּיל, וְעָשָׂה מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה בָּאָרֶץ
בְּיָמָיו תִּוָּשַׁע יְהוּדָה, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל יִשְׁכֹּן לָבֶטַח; וְזֶה-שְּׁמוֹ אֲשֶׁר-יִקְרְאוֹ, יְהוָה צִדְקֵנוּ
Of the travail of his soul he shall see to the full, by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities!
מֵעֲמַל נַפְשׁוֹ, יִרְאֶה יִשְׂבָּע–בְּדַעְתּוֹ יַצְדִּיק צַדִּיק עַבְדִּי, לָרַבִּים; וַעֲוֺנֹתָם הוּא יִסְבֹּל
The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever.
צַדִּיקִים יִירְשׁוּ-אָרֶץ; וְיִשְׁכְּנוּ לָעַד עָלֶיהָ
The blessing of the final triumph of the righteous over evil and the evil one when the Messiah המשיח reigns from Jerusalem. Jerusalem will be the crown jewel of the earth.
You shall also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the open hand of your G-d.
וְהָיִית עֲטֶרֶת תִּפְאֶרֶת, בְּיַד-יְהוָה; וצנוף (וּצְנִיף) מְלוּכָה, בְּכַף-אֱלֹהָיִךְ
Behold, the LORD has proclaimed unto the end of the earth: say to the daughter of Zion: ‘Behold, your Salvation comes; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.’
הִנֵּה יְהוָה, הִשְׁמִיעַ אֶל-קְצֵה הָאָרֶץ, אִמְרוּ לְבַת-צִיּוֹן, הִנֵּה יִשְׁעֵךְ בָּא; הִנֵּה שְׂכָרוֹ אִתּוֹ, וּפְעֻלָּתוֹ לְפָנָיו
Behold, the eye of the LORD is toward them that fear Him, toward them that wait for His mercy;
To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul has waited for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.
For in Him our heart rejoices, because we have trusted in His holy name.
Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we have waited for You.
הִנֵּה עֵין יְהוָה, אֶל-יְרֵאָיו; לַמְיַחֲלִים לְחַסְדּוֹ
לְהַצִּיל מִמָּוֶת נַפְשָׁם; וּלְחַיּוֹתָם, בָּרָעָב
נַפְשֵׁנוּ, חִכְּתָה לַיהוָה; עֶזְרֵנוּ וּמָגִנֵּנוּ הוּא
כִּי-בוֹ יִשְׂמַח לִבֵּנוּ: כִּי בְשֵׁם קָדְשׁוֹ בָטָחְנוּ
יְהִי-חַסְדְּךָ יְהוָה עָלֵינוּ: כַּאֲשֶׁר יִחַלְנוּ לָךְ
This blessing clearly bring the revelation of the mystery of the name of the Messiah המשיח.
It affirms what is stated in blessing #2, that the name of the Messiah המשיח is Yeshua ישוע. It reveals that he is Tsemach David צמח דוד. It declares Yeshua’s name השם ישוע three times in different order, and then declares that his horn shall be exalted upon the throne of his father David דוד.
This blessing declares the power of the name of Yeshua ישוע. In his name HASHEM will show compassion and favor, and He will answer prayers and do miracles.
The rod of Your strength the LORD will send out of Zion:
מַטֵּה-עֻזְּךָ–יִשְׁלַח יְהוָה, מִצִּיּוֹן
The LORD answer you in the day of trouble; the name of the G-d of Jacob set you up on high
He will send forth your help from the sanctuary, and support you out of Zion; He will receive the memorial of all your meal-offerings; He will anoint your burnt-sacrifice; Selah
He will give you the desire of your heart, and He will fulfil all your counsel
We will sing in your Yeshua ישוע, and in the name of our G-d we will set up our standards;
HASHEM will fulfil all your petitions.
יַעַנְךָ יְהוָה, בְּיוֹם צָרָה; יְשַׂגֶּבְךָ, שֵׁם אֱלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב
יִשְׁלַח-עֶזְרְךָ מִקֹּדֶשׁ; וּמִצִּיּוֹן, יִסְעָדֶךָּ
יִזְכֹּר כָּל-מִנְחֹתֶךָ; וְעוֹלָתְךָ יְדַשְּׁנֶה סֶלָה
יִתֶּן–לְךָ כִלְבָבֶךָ; וְכָל–עֲצָתְךָ יְמַלֵּא
נְרַנְּנָה, בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ— וּבְשֵׁם-אֱלֹהֵינוּ נִדְגֹּל
יְמַלֵּא יְהוָה, כָּל–מִשְׁאֲלוֹתֶיךָ
HASHEM, in Your strength the king rejoices; and in Your Yeshua ישוע how greatly does he exult!
You have given him his heart’s desire, and the request of his lips You have not withholden. Selah
For You shower him with choicest blessings; You set a crown of fine gold on his head.
He asked life of You; You gave it to him; even length of days for ever and ever.
יְהוָה, בְּעָזְּךָ יִשְׂמַח-מֶלֶךְ; וּבִישׁוּעָתְךָ, מַה-יגיל (יָּגֶל) מְאֹד
תַּאֲוַת לִבּוֹ, נָתַתָּה לּוֹ; וַאֲרֶשֶׁת שְׂפָתָיו, בַּל-מָנַעְתָּ סֶּלָה
כִּי-תְקַדְּמֶנּוּ, בִּרְכוֹת טוֹב; תָּשִׁית לְרֹאשׁוֹ, עֲטֶרֶת פָּז
חַיִּים שָׁאַל מִמְּךָ–נָתַתָּה לּוֹ; אֹרֶךְ יָמִים, עוֹלָם וָעֶד
This blessing declares that through the Messiah המשיח HASHEM will have favor upon Israel His people, and the works He shall perform through us, and upon Jerusalem where He will establish His holy sanctuary. This accords with the words of the Prophets Isaiah and Micah:
And it shall come to pass in the end of days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established as the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many peoples shall go and say: ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us His ways, and we will walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
O house of Jacob, come, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
וְהָיָה בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים, נָכוֹן יִהְיֶה הַר בֵּית-יְהוָה בְּרֹאשׁ הֶהָרִים, וְנִשָּׂא מִגְּבָעוֹת; וְנָהֲרוּ אֵלָיו, כָּל-הַגּוֹיִם
וְהָלְכוּ עַמִּים רַבִּים, וְאָמְרוּ לְכוּ וְנַעֲלֶה אֶל-הַר-יְהוָה אֶל-בֵּית אֱלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב, וְיֹרֵנוּ מִדְּרָכָיו, וְנֵלְכָה בְּאֹרְחֹתָיו: כִּי מִצִּיּוֹן תֵּצֵא תוֹרָה, וּדְבַר-יְהוָה מִירוּשָׁלִָם
וְשָׁפַט בֵּין הַגּוֹיִם, וְהוֹכִיחַ לְעַמִּים רַבִּים; וְכִתְּתוּ חַרְבוֹתָם לְאִתִּים, וַחֲנִיתוֹתֵיהֶם לְמַזְמֵרוֹת—לֹא-יִשָּׂא גוֹי אֶל-גּוֹי חֶרֶב, וְלֹא-יִלְמְדוּ עוֹד מִלְחָמָה
בֵּית, יַעֲקֹב—לְכוּ וְנֵלְכָה, בְּאוֹר יְהוָה
Indeed, He says: ‘It is too light a thing that you should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will also give you for a light of the nations, that you may be My Yeshua unto the end of the earth.’
וַיֹּאמֶר, נָקֵל מִהְיוֹתְךָ לִי עֶבֶד, לְהָקִים אֶת-שִׁבְטֵי יַעֲקֹב, ונצירי (וּנְצוּרֵי) יִשְׂרָאֵל לְהָשִׁיב; וּנְתַתִּיךָ לְאוֹר גּוֹיִם, לִהְיוֹת יְשׁוּעָתִי עַד-קְצֵה הָאָרֶץ
This blessing concludes with the prayer for the return of the Shekinah השכינה, the full glory of HASHEM, to Zion (Jerusalem). This is the vision of the Prophet Ezekiel יחזקאל :
Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looks toward the east;
and behold, the glory of the G-d of Israel came from the way of the east; and His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth did shine with His glory.
And the appearance of the vision which I saw was like the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city; and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.
And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose face is toward the east.
וַיּוֹלִכֵנִי, אֶל-הַשָּׁעַר–שַׁעַר, אֲשֶׁר פֹּנֶה דֶּרֶךְ הַקָּדִים
וְהִנֵּה, כְּבוֹד אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּא, מִדֶּרֶךְ הַקָּדִים; וְקוֹלוֹ, כְּקוֹל מַיִם רַבִּים, וְהָאָרֶץ, הֵאִירָה מִכְּבֹדוֹ
וּכְמַרְאֵה הַמַּרְאֶה אֲשֶׁר רָאִיתִי, כַּמַּרְאֶה אֲשֶׁר-רָאִיתִי בְּבֹאִי לְשַׁחֵת אֶת-הָעִיר, וּמַרְאוֹת, כַּמַּרְאֶה אֲשֶׁר רָאִיתִי אֶל-נְהַר-כְּבָר; וָאֶפֹּל אֶל-פָּנָי
וּכְבוֹד יְהוָה בָּא אֶל-הַבָּיִת, דֶּרֶךְ שַׁעַר, אֲשֶׁר פָּנָיו דֶּרֶךְ הַקָּדִים
Thus the glory of HASHEM will emanate from Zion and cover the whole earth. This is the word of HASHEM to Moses משה and to the Prophet Havakkuk חבקוק:
But truly, as I live– all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD—
וְאוּלָם, חַי-אָנִי: וְיִמָּלֵא כְבוֹד-יְהוָה, אֶת-כָּל-הָאָרֶץ
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
כִּי תִּמָּלֵא הָאָרֶץ לָדַעַת אֶת-כְּבוֹד יְהוָה, כַּמַּיִם יְכַסּוּ עַל-יָם
This blessing is the result of the previous blessing. It is the bursting forth of thanksgiving to HASHEM FOR ALL His magnificent and unsearchable attributes; His consuming holiness and glory; and His Great Name as He shines forth through the heavenlies upon the earth in splendor and radiance.
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High
טוֹב, לְהֹדוֹת לַיהוָה; וּלְזַמֵּר לְשִׁמְךָ עֶלְיוֹן
The Blessing of the Cohenim ברכת כהנים is given before the last blessing.
The reign of HASHEM BRINGS TRUE PEACE, full of grace, mercy and compassion חן חסד ורחמים upon Israel, as upon one man, through the great revelation of the Messiah המשיח. The peace fills the heavenlies and comes upon the earth in billows. This begins the GREAT SHABBAT of the Messianic age. יום שכלו שבת.
And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and confidence forever.
וְהָיָה מַעֲשֵׂה הַצְּדָקָה, שָׁלוֹם; וַעֲבֹדַת, הַצְּדָקָה–הַשְׁקֵט וָבֶטַח, עַד-עוֹלָם
For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele-Wonderful, Yoets-Counsellor, El-Gibbor-Mighty God, Avi-Ad-Everlasting Father, Sar Shalom-Prince of Peace;
That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts performs this.
כִּי-יֶלֶד יֻלַּד-לָנוּ, בֵּן נִתַּן-לָנוּ, וַתְּהִי הַמִּשְׂרָה, עַל-שִׁכְמוֹ; וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ פֶּלֶא יוֹעֵץ, אֵל גִּבּוֹר, אֲבִי-עַד, שַׂר-שָׁלוֹם
לם רבה (לְמַרְבֵּה) הַמִּשְׂרָה וּלְשָׁלוֹם אֵין-קֵץ, עַל-כִּסֵּא דָוִד וְעַל-מַמְלַכְתּוֹ, לְהָכִין אֹתָהּ וּלְסַעֲדָהּ, בְּמִשְׁפָּט וּבִצְדָקָה; מֵעַתָּה, וְעַד-עוֹלָם, קִנְאַת יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת, תַּעֲשֶׂה-זֹּאת
The Shemoneh Esrei שמונה עשרה concludes with the prayer for all these things to occur in the days of our life.
But they that wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.
וְקוֹיֵ יְהוָה יַחֲלִיפוּ כֹחַ, יַעֲלוּ אֵבֶר כַּנְּשָׁרִים; יָרוּצוּ וְלֹא יִיגָעוּ, יֵלְכוּ וְלֹא יִיעָפוּ
